Toby Keith Background
Toby Keith spent
most of childhood split between Oklahoma and Arkansas. During summers, Toby would visit his grandmother regularly in Fort
Smith, Arkansas, where she owned Billie Garner's Supper Club. It was here that Toby Keith first discovered his interest in
music, as he couldn't get enough of watching different artists perform at the Supper Club. As a young child, Toby would even
get up on the bandstand so that he could perform alongside the band, as this future country superstar had been learning to
play the guitar since he was eight. After graduating high school, Toby Keith got a job working in the oil fields, and in his
free time he and a few of his friends decided to form a band. Along with his friends Keith Cory, David "Yogi" Vowell, Danny
Smith, and Scott Webb, Toby Keith played in the Easy Money Band, which gigged in local bars and music venues.
until the early 1990s that Toby Keith decided it was time to truly pursue his dreams of becoming a musician. He packed up
and moved to Nashville, where he busked on street corners and on Music Row, and also distributed demo tapes to various record
companies in the hopes of attracting a label's attention. After receiving no positive feedback in Nashville, Toby Keith returned
home feeling like a failure. But then in a twist of fate, a flight attendant listened to Keith's demos and decided to send
it to Harold Shedd, a Mercury Records executive. Shedd instantly realized that Keith could be a huge star, so he traveled
to see Keith perform live and signed him immediately to Mercury Records.
As soon as Keith has signed with Mercury, his
career exploded. His first single, "Should've Been a Cowboy", skyrocketed to the number one spot on the Billboard Hot Country
Songs chart in 1993, and ultimately became the most-played country song of the entire decade. His self-titled debut album
went on to be certified platinum by the RIAA, and Toby Keith became an international sensation. Few other country artists
could compete with Keith's success, as he dominated the genre with his catchy and patriotic country tunes. He is also one
of the most acclaimed artists in country, with four AMAs, seven ACM awards, two CMA awards, and a Billboard award, just to
name a few. This incredible country superstar has left an undeniable mark on the tapestry of country music, and now you have
