Todd Rundgren Background
Hailing from Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, Todd
Rundgren was introduced to the guitar as a young boy. At first he took lessons but once they ended, he continued to pick the
guitar on his own. In his formative teen years, Rundgren immersed himself in the pop music genre. And, at the age of 16, he
established his very first band, Money. After graduating from high school, Rundgren pulledup stakes and relocated to Wildwood,
New Jersey. There he cut his teeth by sitting in with various groups. He eventually ended up joining the fold of Woody's Truck
Stop, a blues group. Rundgren stuck with the band for awhile but split from the group, along with Carson Van Osten, to launch
a group called the Nazz in 1967. Borrowing their band's name from a virtually unknown song by the Yardbirds, Nazz was influenced
by a melting pot of British Invasion groups. Undeniably, the Nazz are considered to be the original Anglophiles. Rock history
brims with musicians that mined inspiration from groups like the Beatles, but those groups pale in comparison to the Nazz.
After addingtwo more musicians to their group, the Nazz eventually found themselves hooked up with a band manager, John Kurland.
In 1968, the band inked a deal with SGC Records. Their eponymous album dropped in the fall of that year and featured "Hello,
It's Me." After a handful of efforts, Rundgren called it quits in 1969. He went on to work for Bearsville Records as an engineer
and in-house producer. He also minted a band known as Runt. Rundgren was essentially his own one-man band, playing everything
except bass and drums. Their first album dropped in 1970, garnering fans at a glacial pace. The lead-off track, "We Gotta
Get You a Woman," landed in the Top 20 at the dawn of 1971. And, it was the double album Something/Anything?, which arrived
in 1972, that put Rundgren on the map and elevated his profile with audiences. As the decades have sailed by, Rundgren has
managed to keep the momentum going. He has builta successful solo career, masteredtechnological advancements and has cementeda
solid reputation as both a gifted engineer and producer.
