Tom Jones Background
Jones, born Thomas John Woodward in South Wales, never liked spending his days in school or kicking around the football after
class. What he did like was music, and he gained confidence throughout his childhood by singing to anyone who would listen—from
his own family to large crowds at weddings. His passion for singing hit a major bump in the road when he was 12, as he was
diagnosed with tuberculosis and had to spend two years convalescing and nursing his voice back to health. Fortunately, he
recovered, and his robust and soulful voice was too great to go unnoticed, so in 1963, he became the front man for Tommy Scott
and the Senators, a Welsh beat group. Despite their efforts and countless nights spend gigging at dance halls and clubs, the
band had little success, but it did provide Tom the opportunity that changed his life.
The band was playing in Wales
when Gordon Mills, a talent manager, discovered Tom's full-throated and easy crooning voice. Without even hesitating, Mills
took Tom to London, became his manager, and got him a recording contract. From there, Tom's career took off, and he became
one of the greatest musicians in the world. He spent time performing in Las Vegas, where he was known for wearing half-unbuttoned
shirts and tight trousers as he grooved energetically on stage. He also formed a tight friendship with the king of rock and
roll himself, Elvis Presley.
Tom was a legend around the world, but he was revered as a hero in Britain. In 1999, Queen
Elizabeth II knighted Tom for his "services to music", making him Sir Tom Jones. Today, he not only continues to sing and
perform, but he also mentors other aspiring singers on the BBC show, "The Voice", where he is one of the coaches and judges
of young talent. Thankfully, Tom Jones isn't too busy with "The Voice" to head out on tour to perform his biggest hits for
