The band was formed in Florida in 1976. Their lead singer, Tom Petty didn't have any musical aspirations until he saw Elvis Presley film a movie in Ocala, Florida, and being that close to "the king" inspired him. As such, he put the band together and they released their debut album that same year. Over the next ten years, the band put out eight albums, and all of them charted. Petty broke away for a time to pursue a solo career, but they are back together and better than ever.
