Tommy Castro Band Background

Hailing from San Jose, California, Tommy Castro picked up the guitar when he was just ten years old. Early on, Tommy Castro was influenced by artists like Elvin Bishop, Mike Bloomfield and Eric Clapton. Once he delved into the roots of his inspirations, he soon became entranced with Freddie King, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Muddy Waters and Elmore James. Castro developed his singing style from consistently tuning into artists like James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Ray Charles and Otis Redding. Castro cut his teeth by gigging around the Bay Area. He later played guitar for the Dynatones, a San Francisco group, who inked a record contract with Warner Bros. Castro's time with the band proved to be a good career move for him, exposing him to large audiences and enabling him to support artists like Albert King and Carla Thomas. In 1993, Castro established his own band and issued No Foolin', his debut self-produced effort. Additionally, he claimed the Bay Area Music Award for Best Club Band, also in 1993. He took home the same award a year later. In 1997, Castro garnered more awards to showcase, which included Bammies for Outstanding Blues Musician and for Outstanding Blues Album for his album, Exception to the Rule. Also in that year, Castro and his band scored a gig to serve as the house band for Comedy Showcase, which came on after NBC's Saturday Night Live. The stint lasted three years. In early 2000, Live at the Fillmore arrived, which was well-received by critics and fans alike. Even the great B.B. King raved about the album. In 2001, Castro split from the Blind Pig Records and cut Guilty of Love under the 33rd Street label. In 2003, Gratitude dropped with Triple Trouble landing that same year. Castro went back to Blind Pig for his album, Soul Shaker, in 2005. Two years later, Painkiller arrived. Hard Believer followed in 2009. His latest album, The Devil You Know, includes contributions from a string of other talents.
