About Tommy Emmanuel

A native of Australia, Tommy would start playing music not long after he started walking. Before the age of five he had already received his first guitar, and legend has it that Tommy was inducted into the ranks of career musicianship when he was just six years old. Playing in a family band, Tommy would see more of the Australian countryside before the age of ten than many Australians do in their whole lives. The family band would fall apart when Tommy's father passed away, but Tommy's passion for music would carry on as he continued playing music with his brother and entered various music contests.

Tommy would enter into a series of different bands during his teens and early twenties, from the folk rooted Southern Star Band to rock artists Dragon. He would also play with musical legends across the industry, from Eric Clapton to John Denver. Tommy's musical credentials would eventually earn him a spot performing with the John Farnham Band, which would pave the way for Tommy's prime time spot playing at the Sydney Summer Olympics, which would be one of the biggest performances of Tommy's lifetime.

With the buzz generated from his gig at the Olympics and having received an accolade from Chet Atkins as a Certified Guitar Player, Tommy set out on his very own solo career that would grow by leaps and bounds over the next decade. Tommy would receive Grammy nominations and accolades from various publications, including Acoustic Guitar Magazine and Guitar Player Magazine.

Tommy would spend the greater part of the decade in a constant state of touring, writing, and recording. He would experience health problems and have to take a break from recording, but Tommy's musical spirit could not be suppressed as he would soon be out on the road again, keeping a constantly active and grueling touring schedule that would criss-cross the world. Today Tommy has produced over two dozen albums and remains one of the biggest influences across the folk/country/blues genres.

Previous Hits

Tommy's breakout album would be his debut record, appropriately named From Out Of Nowhere. The album would introduce Tommy Emmanuel to the country and bluegrass crowd and be carried by his lasting hit "Limehouse Blues", today still one of his most beloved tracks. He would follow up with the colorful Up From Down Under album which would integrate country and jazz sounds into Tommy's style, making him appeal to an ever widening audience and pin him as a dynamic performer. Hits from the album include title track "Up From Down Under" and much lauded covers of "Lady Madonna" and "Michelle", written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

By 1993 The Journey would drop, solidifying rock into Tommy Emmanuel's already impressive repertoire of musical capabilities. The album would be carried by hits "Big Brother" and "Amy" and also feature longtime mentor Chet Atkins playing guitar on the album. Years later, at the turn of the millennium, Tommy released Only, which received rough critical acclaim but still produced interesting tracks including "The Robin" and "Padre".

Tommy has always been a patron for philanthropy, playing numerous benefits for different humanitarian catastrophes around the world. This includes making appearances to raise money for people affected by the 2002 terrorist bombings in Bali, as well as multiple benefits for survivors of the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

Emmanuel has received one of the highest honors an Australian can receive, being honored as a Member of the Order of Australia.

Tommy has had a long standing relationship with musician Chet Atkins. Chet has been influencing Tommy since a young age, and one of the greatest achievements Tommy can recount has been being able to jam with his mentor.
