Tommy James and the Shondells Background

This highly acclaimed band's roots date all the way back to 1959, when 12 year old Tommy James became the lead singer of a band based in Niles, Michigan. Five years later, the group decided to rename themselves "The Shondells", mostly because Tommy liked the way that it sounded. The Shondells were originally comprised of Tommy James, Larry Coverdale, Larry Wright, Craig Villeneuve, and Jim Payne. In 1964, the band wrote and recorded the song "Hanky Panky", a Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich song, which achieved moderate commercial success in the Midwest. The Shondells disbanded after high school when their songs achieved no national success, and each member went their own way for a brief period of time.

Tommy James tried to organize new bands in the years after high school, yet none of them stuck. During this time, Bob Mack, a dance promoter in Pittsburgh, discovered the group's old single "Hanky Panky" and started playing it at dance parties and clubs. Suddenly, bootleggers in Pennsylvania started making illegal copies of the song and ended up selling over 800,000 copies of the popular song. When a disc jockey contacted Tommy James and asked him to come perform the song live, James was stunned. He tried to gather the rest of the Shondells, but all of them were either working, married, or away in the service, so he went to Pittsburgh by himself and tried to assemble a group as quickly as he could.

Once he assembled The Shondells, Tommy James' career exploded. With hit song after hit song, his band became one of the biggest names in rock and roll in the late 1960s. The band disbanded in the early 1970s due to exhaustion, but have since been performing together on and off and have released new music.
