About Tower of Power
The phenomenal Tower of Power story would start when Emilio Castillo
hooked up with living legend Stephen Doc Kupka, forming the foundations of the jazz funk ensemble Tower of Power that would
begin their touring career in the vibrant music scenes of the San Francisco bay area. Originally going by the name The Motowns,
the band would adopt the name Tower of Power at the start of the 70s and enlist a litany of talented jazz, funk, and R&B
performers that would sign onto San Francisco Records. They would begin to receive radio play across the bay area, hitting
the airwaves alongside other artists such as Eric Mercury and Marvin Gaye. They would outgrow the confines of Northern California,
signing onto Warner Bros. and becoming national phenomenons that dominated the jazz funk movement of the 70s. They would hit
album after hit album throughout the decade, with each record more successful than the last, eventually becoming household
names with dozens of sales certifications and a consistent place on the national Billboard music charts.
sound would mature and morph over time, keeping their addictive jam elements while also pioneering the funk movement. They
would also venture into disco, leading the musical world as the various experimental funk and fusion R&B genres began
to take root in the American mainstream. Throughout the 80s and 90s, the band would collaborate with various legendary artists,
from Little Feat to the Dave Matthews Band. Despite numerous lineup changes over the years, Tower of Power has retained their
core sound and unbeatable charm, with a thin but consistent stream of new material that continues to wow and amaze both fans
and newcomers alike. Despite their lack of time in the studio, the band still hits the tour road from time to time, proving
again and again why they remain trailblazers of the jazz-funk world.
The band's self titled
1973 release remains one of the pillars of the soul/jazz/funk movement, and has retained its addictive qualities despite being
over four decades old. The self produced mega hit would receive gold certification and climb the Billboard charts, resting
at #15 on the Billboard Top LPs chart and spawning "So Very Hard to Go", the #17 charting single that pushed Tower of Power
firmly into the mainstream. The album received a coveted and near perfect four and a half stars from AllMusic, and spawned
three additional mega hit singles over three years: "You're Still a Young Man", "This Time It's Real", and "What is Hip".
of Power's 1974 follow up would go above and beyond considerably high expectations, and today is considered one of the most
important musical productions in modern music history. The album again gained four and a half stars from AllMusic, and would
reach #13 on the Billboard Soul charts and #26 on the Billboard's best LPs. The album spawned just two singles, which nevertheless
have become foundational pieces of jazz-funk canon: "Don't Change Horses (In The Middle of a Stream)" and "Time Will Tell",
with the former sailing to the #26 position on the Billboard singles chart.
