Tracy grew up in Arkansas, and had already formed his first band by the age of 16. In 1990, he left his home state for Nashville, Tennessee to try his luck at becoming a recording artist. While he played around town and participated in local talent shows, he worked as ironworker and in phone sales to try to make ends meet. He got a gig performing at the Bluebird Café and met his manager Wayne Edwards. With the help of his new manager, Lawrence began recording his first album, Sticks and Stones. But before the album was released Lawrence and his then girlfriend were robbed at gunpoint, in which Lawrence was shot four times. Although his recovery was difficult, he managed to overcome the horrific event and go on to release four singles that hit the top of the Billboard charts. He was also named Billboard's Top New Male Vocalist of the year. Since then he has released numerous albums and won countless awards for his work in the music business. And he's still going!
