Trey Songz Background
Born Tremaine Aldon Neverson, Trey Songz grew up in the
small town of Petersburg, Virginia. Songz became an Army brat, moving around to different military bases over a seven-year
span after his mother married a U.S. Army soldier. When he was 14, the family went back to Petersburg where Songz started
his freshman year of high school. Songz said, "When I came back, that's when I really found out who I was. Those were the
years I basically found Trey Songz. I didn't really get into singing until I came back."
Music lessons weren't in the
cards for Songz, so he made do with the radio, playing it constantly at home and in the car. His mother once said, "He's familiar
with the Temptations, Donny Hathaway, Otis Redding, Michael Jackson, because that's what we were listening to growing up."
When he was younger, Songz said he loved to belt out tunes in the shower but never dreamed he could sing for a living.
his friends' urging, Songz entered a talent show in Petersburg in 1998. As his biggest fan, his mother brought almost two-dozen
people with her to cheer Songz on. Songz's performance turned out to be a success. A year later, Songz was introduced to Troy
Taylor, a New Jersey-based music producer. Songz committed to finishing high school while he spent his summers working with
Taylor on his music in New Jersey. During the school year, Songz founded a group dubbed All Night Productions with some friends.
After high school graduation, Songz moved in with Taylor in New Jersey, hoping to make a go of music as a career.
Atlantic Records courted Songz, and he inked a deal with the label in 2003. He was evengiven a $100,000 advance. I Gotta Make
It came out two years later. The album sold 395,000 copies and landed at No. 20 on the Billboard album charts. Always mindful
of his family, Songz fulfilled a childhood promise, and he bought his mother a new house. "When he finally saw it, he ran
up and down the stairs like a little kid, because we had never had a house. It's funny, but the only man in my life who has
actually done what he said he was gonna do is the one I raised," his mother said.
Songz put out his sophomore album,
Trey Day, in 2007, which scored the No. 11 spot on the Billboard charts."Can't Help But Wait" was his first hit single, which
netted the No. 11 spot on Billboard's Hot 100 singles and was given a Grammy nod for Best R&B Male Vocal Performance.
Two years later, Songz concentrated on revamping his sound and image in hopes of gaining more exposure to a wider audience.
He cut off his braids, he started doing over-the-top workouts, he dropped the baggy jeans and sneakers and suited up in button-down
shirts and finely tailored pants. He also revamped his musical style, chucking the romantic ballads in favor of more upbeat,
erotic hip-hop tracks. His efforts in overhauling his look turned out to be a massive success. Ready climbed to No. 3 on the
Billboard album charts and soaked the airwaves with singles like, "Successful," "I Need a Girl," "I Invented Sex," "Neighbors
Know My Name" and "LOL Smiley Face." Songz divulges that on Ready he surrendered originality for mainstream success. "The
public likes generic more than they like to admit, so that's what I gave them - I gave them sexual singles and they ate it
up." As evidenced by record sales, a Grammy nomination and the 2010 BET Award for Best Male R&B Artist, Songz formula
for success worked!

he never had when he was growing up. "I never really had male influences in my life. Steady, male influences. And that's what
I wanna be for my family. As a musician, I definitely will attain everything that I set out to. I work very hard. But more
