Dating back to 2009, Merrill Garbus has been
commanding audiences with her brand of music under the guise of tUnE-YarDs. And that project's name has always gone hand in
hand with progression - whether because of Garbus' volcanic stage presence or tUnE-YarDs' remarkable ability to surprise audiences
in which their tunes unravel. Their first album, BiRd-BrAiNs, grabbed attention when The New York Times billed it as "a confident
do-it-yourselfer's opening salvo: a staticky, low-fi, abrasive attention-getter." Garbus cemented a status as an impressive
live performer through an exhaustive tour schedule. Their sophomore album, Whokill, dropped in 2011, serving as an audacious
example of their work that paved the way for recognition from dozens of critics, which included being selected as theNo. 1
album of 2011 by the Village Voice's annual "Pazz and Jop" poll of critics.. As the awards and accolades piled up, so did
their fans. They maintained their momentum and worked with folks like Questlove and Yoko Ono. After the flurry of success,
Garbus decided to take a break. "I took the Fall [of 2012] off and started taking both Haitian dance and drum lessons. It
was nice; I was trying to be healthy and have a good time. And then, in January , I was like: 'I have nothing.' I've
never had nothing before - I've always had some songs that I'm planning on recording; I've always been working live with the
looping pedal and writing that way. And I thought, 'OK, if I'm going to grow as an artist, I need to do this differently.'
So I went to my studio five days a week and told myself I would be doing two demos a day. I also had rules: 'This week I'm
only going to write using drum machines'; 'This week I'm going to write using vocal melodies first, and build something around
that.' At the end of that, I had about 30 demos." The culmination of those demos is Nikki Nack, their latest effort.
