tUnE-YarDs Background

The eclectic tUnE-YarDs has been handcrafting lo-fi experimental tunes since 2009, when the outfit first started as the brainchild of Merrill Garbus. She has since teamed up with a rotating cast of artists, and the band's inclusion of percussion and ukulele offer an enticing option for those searching for original new music.

Raised in New York and New Canaan, Connecticut, Garbus studied at Smith College. In the past, she worked as a puppeteer for a Vermont-based theater company, Sandglass Theater, and resided in Montreal at one point, playing ukulele for the band, Sister Suvi. After her debut tUnE-YarDs album arrived in 2009, Garbus relocated to Oakland, California, where her bandmate, Nate Brenner, also resides.

Bird-Brains was originally self-released by Garbus - issued on recycled cassette tape. It was cut with the help of a handheld voice recorder. In June 2009, a limited edition vinyl dropped. And, a month later, it was revealed that tUnE-YarDs had inked a deal with 4AD.

Whokill came out in the spring of 2011. The lead track, "Bizness," came first in February 2011. Likening the group to Sonic Youth, Frontier Psychiatrist stated, "If Bird-Brains was Garbus' Evol, a record bursting with musical ideas that attempted to subvert the notion of song, Whokill is Garbus' Sister, a record that embraces the traditional pop song as a vehicle to convey those ideas."

The album and the tracks, "Gangsta" and "Bizness," garnered mention on many top album and song lists of 2011, including Rolling Stone, Time Magazine, New York Times and Spin Magazine.

Garbus initiated work on her third LP during the last part of 2013. The working title wasSink-o. It's scheduled to be released in the spring of 2014.
