Turisas formed in Hämeenlinna, a rural community in Southern Finland, in 1997. Vocalist Warlord Nyguard and guitarist/bassist Jussi Wickström took their name from a famous warrior god in Finnish mythology and began making heavy metal music soon after recruiting percussionist Tude Lehtonen, keyboardist Antti Ventola and guitarist Georg Laakso.
