Connecticut Huskies Basketball History

Whether it's the men's basketball program or the women's basketball program, the University of Connecticut Huskies represents one of the most storied programs in NCAA basketball history. Boasting countless NCAA, NBA, and WNBA legends, Huskies basketball teams never fail to offer some of the most competitive and exciting games in the NCAA year after year. The history of UCONN Huskies basketball dates all the way back to 1901 and the Huskies have appeared in the Final Four five times which is the ninth most all-time, winning four National Championships along the way. Despite winning the NCAA Tournament last season, the Huskies will still be looking to improve upon their third place finish in the American Athletic Conference last season. They may have lost some key contributors from last season's title run but the Huskies are always bringing in some of the best recruits in the country and you can expect incoming shooting guard Daniel Hamilton to have a big impact this season. Big things are in store for the Huskies and die hard UCONN fans will want to be in Gampel Pavilion all season long as the Huskies try to repeat as National Champions.

Connecticut Huskies Basketball Conference

The UCONN Huskies play in the newly formed American Athletic Conference which is also now the home of a few former Big East schools including the University of Connecticut and South Florida. The Big East has been in a tumultuous state for many years, with clashes between programs that had football programs and those that did not. The newly formed American Athletic Conference boasts schools from Texas to Florida and all the way to Connecticut. The dynamic conference has proven to be one of the best in men's college basketball since forming last year, with teams like Cincinnati and UCONN as perennial contenders. Cincinnati is the defending American Athletic Conference regular season champion, but the UCONN Huskies won the National Championship in 2014, bringing a National Championship to the conference during its first year of existence. Although it is only one year old there have already been changes in the American Athletic Conference, with the departure of Louisville and Rutgers and the addition of Tulsa and Tulane. With the American Athletic Conference shakeup, things may look a little different on the college basketball landscape, but no matter which conference they are in, the Temple Owls are a team with a storied legacy that continues to find success. Expect big things to happen in the American Athletic Conference in the years to come as new rivalries are established and it continues to prove itself as one of the premiere college hoops conferences in the country.

The Experience

College basketball is one of the most exciting sports there is, and watching it at home does not even come close to matching up to the thrill of being in the arena for a game. The game boasts some of the best student-athletes in the world along with some of the most passionate fans in all of sports, and the biggest contests have an atmosphere that is unrivaled. When you set foot in Gampel Pavilion for a UCONN Huskies home basketball game this will all be clear. As the teams set up for opening tip off the fans stand up and vociferously cheer for their alma mater and hometown favorites. The game continues full of back and forth action, big time shots, and clutch defensive stops. Before you know it the clock is winding down in the second half and the two sides are wrapped up in yet another tight contest. Your palms get sweaty with each trip down the floor and each time a player from your favorite team lets loose a shot you hold your breath until the ball tickles the twine. This continues until the final buzzer when the Huskies' side erupts after another big win and their fans flow out of the arena in jubilation.

The history of UCONN Huskies basketball goes back 113 years but it was not until 1999 that the program finally won their first National Championship. The Huskies' 2014 National Championship was the first not won under former head coach Jim Calhoun. The 2014 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player Shabazz Napier had quite the college career, winning the National Championship during his freshman season and then closing out his time at UCONN with another one in his senior season.
