Unearth started making metalcore music in Massachusetts in 1998 and quickly gained a loyal following, playing shows with like-minded groups like Killswitch Engage and Black Dahlia Murder as well as opening for big names in metal music like Slipknot and Lamb of God. Unearth released three albums, 1999’s Above the Fall of Man (Endless Flight), 2001’s Stings of Consciousness and 2002’s Endless, before issuing their breakthrough album, Metal Blade, in 2004.
