Texas Longhorns Schedule in 2013-14

It's college basketball season again and that can only mean one thing, the Texas Longhorns are looking to leave their mark on the Big 12 and the NCAA as a whole. In the last decade or so Texas has established itself as a true national power and has recruited some of the best and most exciting college basketball players in the country. The Longhorns call the Big 12 Conference home. While the Big 12 had long been known for its college football, basketball has always been a big deal in the conference as well and in recent years several schools have stepped up their game making it extremely difficult for a team to navigate the tough conference schedule. Perennial powerhouses Kansas and Oklahoma State always are staunch competition and with the recent development of programs like Oklahoma and Kansas State, the conference is only getting tougher. The Longhorns nearly notched a.500 record in 2012-13, but their 7-11 record against Big 12 opponents certainly hurt in that regard. The team is hoping to shoot up the conference standings this season, and could have the necessary talent to make it happen. Their schedule is loaded with tough games and some of the best programs in all of college basketball will be heading to Frank Erwin Events Center looking to come out with a win against U.T. However, as history has shown, this is easier said than done and the Longhorns are always prepared to give their home crowd something to cheer for.

The Longhorns will face a tough test when the Oklahoma State Cowboys come to town to hit the court and do battle. The Cowboys have one of the best teams in the Big 12 this season thanks greatly in part to the return of point guard Marcus Smart. Smart decided to skip the 2013 NBA Draft despite projections that he'd be selected in the Top 5 picks, showing the kind of character and maturity that one doesn't often see from such a young player. Smart is ready to lead his team to the Final Four this season, and the Cowboys are sure to be a tough out for the Longhorns. However, if the Longhorns can emerge from this matchup victorious it will signal to the rest of the conference that they mean business.

The Longhorns will finish up things at home this season when the TCU Horned Frogs come to Austin. Texas will certainly want to take down this in-state rival, but it's going to take some disciplined basketball on both ends of the court. The Longhorn definitely want to finish out their home schedule with a victory, and Longhorns fans should be there en masse to cheer on their favorite team.

Texas Longhorns History

The Texas Longhorns basketball team dates back to 1906 and the hoops program at Texas has developed into one of the premier destinations for the best high school players in the country on an annual basis. The Longhorns have had a lot of success over the years, reaching the NCAA Tournament 30 times. The team has been to the elite eight seven times and made it all the way to the Final Four on three occasions. Surprisingly, Texas is yet to win a National Championship, or even reach the title game, but that is something the team is working hard to change as soon as this season.

Texas Longhorns Trivia

When was the last time the Texas Longhorns were able to reach the Final Four?

The answer is 2003, ending a drought of more than 50 years.

Great Players for the Texas Longhorns

The Texas Longhorns have seen some incredible players come through the program over the years. One of the best players to ever suit up for the Longhorns was Kevin Durant. While Durant only played in Austin for one year, he made a real impact during that single season, winning the National Player of the Year award with relative ease. Durant has gone on to star in the National Basketball Association, where he is currently one of the top players in the league.

Texas Longhorns Fan Traditions

College hoops fans love a good rivalry, and that is certainly the case with the Texas Longhorns fans. The main rivalry with Texas is with the Oklahoma Sooners. The basketball rivalry began in 1996 when the Big 12 was formed, but the two schools already had a long standing football rivalry that just spilled over to other sports when they began competing against one another in conference play. As Texas has become a national power under head coach Rick Barnes a rivalry has emerged with the traditional conference power the Kansas Jayhawks. In recent years the two programs have found themselves neck and neck for conference titles as well as higher national rankings and seeding in the NCAA Tournament. Both of these rivalries have been fun to watch over the years and should provide for excellent basketball games in the 2013-2014 season.
