UNLV Rebels Basketball History

During the late 1970s, '80s and early '90s no tickets were more in demand than those to see the UNLV Rebels. Under the leadership of legendary and controversial coach Jerry Tarkanian, who led the Rebels to victory in the NCAA Tournament finals in 1990. With home games against other elite Mountain West programs like San Diego State and New Mexico, the UNLV schedule is chock full of can't miss games. Now is the perfect time to get out to see the Rebels in action as they look to make a serious move up the Mountain West standings. With an exciting team filled with new talent, you won't want to miss a second of the rim-rocking action as the Rebels look to pile up the wins all season long. Last season saw the Rebels end a four year run of making the NCAA Tournament and all of the returning players are determined not to let something like that happen again. You can count on UNLV to be looking to exact revenge on the SDSU Aztecs who were partly responsible for the Rebels missing the Tournament last season after they defeated the Rebels on their home court during the conference semifinals. Several former UNLV standouts have gone on to have long successful NBA careers and you have the chance to see the next crop of NBA stars playing while they are still in college.

UNLV Rebels Basketball Conference

In recent years the Mountain West Conference has emerged as a true national powerhouse. There are now eleven members of the Mountain West Conference: San Diego State, UNLV, Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico, Nevada, Fresno State, Wyoming, Utah State, and San Jose State. Previous members have included TCU, Utah, and BYU. Of the current members, Utah State leads the way with twenty NCAA Tournament appearances. However, so far all of their appearances have come before joining the Mountain West. UNLV and Wyoming, two charter members of the Mountain West, are next in line with 19 and 14 respectively. UNLV and Wyoming are also the only two members of the conference to win a National Championship, with UNLV winning in 1990 and Wyoming winning all the way back in 1943. Lately it has been San Diego State, New Mexico, and UNLV who have dominated the conference on the basketball court with SDSU tearing up the national rankings during the 2013-2014 season. The current season is a celebration marking the fifteenth anniversary of the creation of the Mountain West Conference.

The Experience

Attending a top college basketball game is one of the best experiences to be found in sports. Many of the top student athletes in the world take the court in college basketball, when this is combined with some of the most passionate fans in all of sports there is an atmosphere in the arena that cannot be found anywhere else. When you set foot in Thomas and Mack Center for a UNLV Rebels home basketball game this will all be clear. As the teams set up for opening jump ball the fans get on their feet and loudly cheer for their alma mater and hometown favorites. The game continues full of end to end action, big time shots, and clutch defensive stops. All of a sudden the clock is winding down in the second half and the two sides are wrapped up in yet another tight contest. Your palms get sweaty with each trip down the floor and each time a player from your favorite team lets loose a shot you hold your breath until the ball tickles the twine. This continues until the final buzzer when the Rebels' side erupts after another big win and their fans exit of the arena in jubilation.

UNLV won the NCAA Championship in 1990 with a victory in the Championship Game over Duke and returned many of their key players the following year which led them to be almost unanimously ranked number one prior to the 1990-1991 season. The 1990-1991 Rebels were billed as one of the greatest teams of all time and lived up to expectations, finishing the regular season undefeated, becoming the first team in twelve years to have accomplished that feat. However, in the Final Four they faced off against a Duke team that was bent on revenge and defeated the Rebels, denying them the chance to repeat.
