UNLV Rebels Football Team Info
For being a small school in a small state, the UNLV Rebels has long list of notable
players who have left Las Vegas and gone on to great success in the NFL. Maybe the most famous of them all is former Philadelphia
Eagles quarterback Randall Cunningham, who would go on to be one of the best quarterbacks of his era. Other famous Rebels
who played in the NFL include Cincinnati Bengal running back Ickey Woods, creator of the famous "Ickey Shuffle", Death Row
Records CEO Suge Knight and ESPN anchor Kenny Mayne. This is a team that has had more than its fair share of great players
from one season to the next, creating a tradition of winning that has helped make them an absolute staple of the Las Vegas
area – which is saying something considering how many options there are for entertainment in one of the most famous
cities in the world.
College Football Experience
College football has plenty of great games on the schedule
each and every season, from plenty of top-tier regular season matchups and bowl games to historic rivalries that you'll have
to see first-hand to believe. These are some of the best amateur athletes in the entire world, though that's something that
you need to see for yourself to truly appreciate. Will you be there when your favorite player hauls in the clutch, game-winning
catch that is headed straight for the highlight reels? Even though baseball is known as the national past time, college football
is known for being one of the best spectator sports you'll find anywhere, giving you plenty of incentive to head out and see
the Rebels in action this season.
UNLV Running Rebels History
The modern era of UNLV football started
in the late-1970s, as the Rebels left Division II in 1978 for greener pastures and since then they've had some big-time success
and plenty of memorable seasons as they've established one of the premier football programs in the country. The Rebels have
produced some fine college football players over the years and have put together some great overall teams, making them a mainstay
of the always ultra-competitive Mountain West in the process. Though they've only had one consensus First Team All-American
at this point (Joe Kristosik, 1998), they've had plenty of other very good players who have come close, and you never know
when the next iconic player is going to burst onto the scene and lead the Rebels back to the top of the conference.
UNLV Rebel Football Trivia
Did you know that Randall Cunningham was an All-American punter?
Though he obviously
was fairly decent at quarterback as well, Cunningham could absolutely bomb the ball down field when the Rebels had to punt
in 1983 and 1984. Cunningham would end up an All-American as a punter for both seasons, though Joe Kristosik – also
a punter – remains the only time a Rebel was a consensus First Team All-American. After showing all kinds of different
skills at UNLV, Cunningham would go on to play in the NFL and is now considered to have been well ahead of his time, as he
had the combination of pocket-throwing abilities and mobility that is standard in pro quarterbacks of today.
