The UTEP Miners play in the ever-challenging Conference USA, where they regularly matchup with powerhouse programs like
the Memphis Tigers. The Miners posted a solid 19-13 record last season, going 8-8 in Conference USA play. They’ll
need to beat some of the big boys of the conference on the road, though, if they’re to join them atop the standings.
UTEP has always had a strong program, but their high point arrived in 1966, when the school was known as Texas Western
College. Texas Western was a highly controversial team in that they started five African-American players, which many schools
at the time didn't allow. They advanced all the way to the NCAA Final to play Kentucky, a team that did not allow African-Americans.
The Miners shocked the heavily-favored Wildcats, and a legend was instantly born. UTEP fans still cherish that moment,
and their college basketball team embodies this history.
