UTEP has always had a strong program, but their high point arrived in 1966, when the school was known as Texas Western
College. Texas Western was a highly controversial team in that they started five African-American players, which many schools
at the time didn't allow. They advanced all the way to the NCAA Final to play Kentucky, a team that did not allow African-Americans.
The Miners shocked the heavily-favored Wildcats, and a legend was instantly born. UTEP fans still cherish that moment, and
their college basketball team embodies this history.
