The thunder of 11,682 professional hockey fans gave birth to the Valley View
Casino Center on Nov. 17, 1966, as the San Diego Gulls took to the ice to claim their home opener in a 4-to-1 victory against
the Seattle Totems. Since its debut, the facility has hosted many professional and amateur teams and athletes, including the
San Diego Clippers and the San Diego Rockets. It has additionally played host to some of the most unforgettable moments in
sports history, like the 1973 Muhammad Ali vs. Ken Norton fight, in which Norton defeated Ali by split decision to become
world champion of boxing. Even Irish miler Eamonn Coghlan shattered the world record for the indoor mile at the Valley View
Casino Center in 1979 and again in 1981. His world indoor record time from 1981 remains unspoiled today.
