Vanderbilt Stadium History

Vanderbilt Stadium was constructed in the late 1920s, giving the Vanderbilt Commodores football team a permanent place to take on all the best teams in college football. Up until Vanderbilt Stadium was built, the team was playing on the northeast corner of the university's campus in a facility called Dudley Field, named for the Dean of the Vanderbilt University Medical School. As the team grew in skill and popularity, it was obvious that they were going to need a bigger facility to play their home games. The original stadium held 20,000 fans, but today the facility holds more than 40,000 cheering Commodores' supporters. The Commodores take on some of the top teams in the country on an annual basis, and this season should be no different. Vanderbilt will host the South Carolina Gamecocks on September 20th for what should be a great SEC clash. The SEC is one of the toughest conferences in college football on each year, and every matchup means a whole lot to the players, fans and everyone else involved. The stands at Vanderbilt Stadium should be packed to the brim for the final home game of the year when the Commodores host the Tennessee Volunteers for a great rivalry game on November 29th. The original stadium was remodeled in the early 1980s to expand the number of seats and change the look of the facility. The stadium and the new press box were made to resemble a Navy ship, which included being painted battleship gray. Subsequent renovations have enhanced the fan experience with inclusion of a Jumbotron and other amenities, and Vanderbilt Stadium can now accommodate up to 40,000 fans.
