Varsity Theatre

History

The Varsity Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota is one of the most treasured theaters in the country. It was first built in the early 1900s, when vaudeville theaters were gaining in popularity. The theater was the place to catch minstrel shows, appearances from the most famous comedians of the day, and screenings of the newly-created silent films. The original theater was built in the turn of the century style, but in the late 1930s, the theater got a facelift and a new style. The Varsity was remodeled to resemble other popular Art Deco buildings of the era. The remodel was the brainchild of Midwest architects Jack Liebenberg & Seeman Kaplan who designed other famous theaters during that time like the Uptown, the Granada/Suburban and the Ritz Theaters. For the next 50 years, the theater served as a movie house.

After decades of showing the hottest films of the day, the movie house re-opened once again with a new purpose and a new style. This time the Varsity Theater became an underground club for the evolving music and entertainment scene in Minneapolis. The theater hosted everything from concerts by legendary bands like Green Day and 2 Live Crew to wrestling nights. After a year of hosting these intense nights of entertainment, the theater became a photography and design studio. Then, in 2005, the theater changed once more, becoming a vaudeville theater for the new millennium. The Varsity became a place to see movie screenings, live theater performances, concerts and dance shows. Today, the theater remains a jewel in Minneapolis' crown, and continues to showcase the talent of local artists and professional performers.

Seating Layout

Although the historic theater retains its original beauty and most of the original structure, it has been modernized over the years to allow for larger concerts and stage productions. Today, the building boasts a Main Floor area for seating capacity and a Mezzanine area for VIP and premium ticket-holders. The theater as a whole can hold more than 900 patrons. The Main Floor offers fans an up-close and personal view of the stage and the artist who is performing. Although some seats are closer than others, every seat in the house will give you a fantastic view of the show you have chosen to see.

Trivia

The Varsity Theater was there at the birth of vaudeville and over-the-top live performances from some of the most famous performers of all time. For years before sound-filled movies were popular, the Varsity was the place to go for live entertainment. And now, the Varsity is once again the talk of the town and the place to not only see the most exciting concerts and live performances, but it is also set up to host weddings. Yes, that's right. If you and your significant other are ready to tie the knot rock and roll style, then the Varsity is the place for you.

With candelabras, deliciously catered food from the adjacent Lording Pasta Bar and a staff to serve your guests all of their favorite cocktails, you and your betrothed will truly get the royal rock and roll treatment. Come and recite your vows where The Fray and Minnesota's own Communist Daughter have performed their greatest hits. Dance the night away with your wedding party where fans watched their favorite artists come to life on stage.
