Balboa Theatre was built in 1924 and became a vaudeville and movie palace venue. The Balboa Theatre was saved from demolition by the Russo family in 1959 and then purchased by the City of San Diego in 1986. In 2002 the decision was made to reopen the theatre after being closed for over twenty years and after the City of San Diego#25;s Redevelopment Agency invested over $26 million into its renovation and restoration it reopened in January 2008.
Balboa Theatre is part of San Diego Theatres, a 501 © 3 non-profit, public benefit corporation established to manage and operate publically-owned performing arts theatre. It is recommended that guests arrive at the Civic Theatre at least 30 minutes prior to the curtain time. Balboa Theatre has Accessible Seating, restrooms and parking access.
