Nassau Coliseum sits on 63 acres of Mitchel Field, a former Army/Air Force base located in the center of Nassau County. The 1,200-acre base was closed in 1960 and Nassau County obtained much of the property the following year and the decision was made to build a 15,000 seat arena (additional seats were added in 1981-1984 that has increased the seating capacity to over 18,000). The building was named Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum to commemorate those who gave their lives in the line of duty.
Nassau Coliseum hosts virtually all forms of entertainment and sporting events such as touring family shows, professional wrestling, boxing, track & field, rock concerts, lacrosse, soccer, and is home to the New York Islanders-NHL team and the NY Dragons-AFL team. Doolin’s Pub, Backstage Café and Bohemian Club are all located in the Lower Lobby and open 90 minutes prior to events and close one hour after the event ends. The box office is open Monday-Friday (9:30am-4:45pm) and during events. Disabled/handicap seating is available.
