WAC Basketball Tournament tickets

2014 WAC Basketball Tournament Schedule

Each March the eyes of the sports world are keenly focused on college basketball and the conference tournaments are when all of the March Madness truly begins. Teams are well aware that the Selection Committee are paying extra close attention as they try to decide which teams should be invited to participate. Conference Tournaments are the last chance for teams to prove that they belong, jockey for a higher seed in the NCAA Tournament, or even becoming an unlikely qualifier by winning their conference tournament and earning an automatic selection. The WAC is one of the most hotly contested conferences in all of college basketball, and since it typically only sends one team to the Big Dance the WAC tournament is of utmost importance to all of the member schools looking to keep their season rolling.

Every year the Western Athletic Conference holds its basketball tournament at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 2014 WAC tournament will take place from Thursday March 13th through Saturday March 15th and the parity in the conference this season indicates that it could be one of the most exciting tournaments yet. Players from all teams will be looking to extend their college careers in each game and hoping that they can help lead their university back to the NCAA Tournament.

WAC Teams

Currently there are nine members of the WAC: CSU Bakersfield, Chicago State University, Grand Canyon University, University of Idaho, University of Missouri - Kansas City, New Mexico State University, Seattle University, University of Texas - Pan American, and Utah Valley University. Although the conference has mostly been known as a football conference, especially after former member BYU won a National Championship, basketball has always been a big deal. In recent years, after a lot of conference realignment, the WAC eliminated football making basketball the most important collegiate sport in the conference. New Mexico State is currently the powerhouse in the conference, especially since their stiffest competition in Boise State, Utah State, and Nevada left to join the Mountain West Conference. This year, however, the conference has been closely contested during the regular season and every team has a good shot at winning the conference tournament and earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Experience

Nothing quite matches the thrill of seeing an intense college basketball game and when you attend a conference tournament you get to see several games all of which are do or die. Featuring several of the best student athletes in college athletics as well as some of the most loyal and vociferous fans in all of sports, these games have an atmosphere that is unrivaled. When you step into the Orleans Arena for the Western Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament this will all be evident. As the teams prepare for the opening tip off, fans stand up and enthusiastically root on their favorite team. The game continues with back and forth action, big time shots, and clutch defensive stops. Before you know it the clock is winding down in the second half and the two sides are wrapped up in yet another historic Western Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament game. You become filled with nervous with each trip down the court and every time a player from your favorite team lets go of a shot you hold your breath until the ball tickles the twine. This continues until the final buzzer when the winning team rejoices. Next thing you know, another game is starting and you get to experience all of the action once again. Each day the intensity builds and the fans grow even more enthusiastic as the elusive conference tournament championship and an automatic NCAA Tournament bid draws closer and closer. Results from the regular season hardly matter anymore as every team is laying it all on the line to advance as far as possible.

NCAA Basketball Conference Tournaments

Sports fans develop a singular obsession – March Madness and college basketball. Any hardcore college basketball fan can tell you that all of the excitement of March Madness really begins before the brackets are even set, during the conference tournaments as teams look to improve their chances of making the NCAA Tournament. Many of the most thrilling games of the college basketball season take place during the conference tournaments as teams who are very familiar with one another play for the second or third time of the year. No one wants to go into the NCAA Tournament after a loss and some of these teams need to win the conference tournament just to make the field of 68.

The WAC Basketball Tournament has been held every year since 1984. Up until 1992 the site of the tournament was always the home court of the regular season conference champions. Up through 2009 the tournament was granted to the highest bidder, but since the 2010 tournament the event has been held at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
