The answer is Sled Dog Music, a Winnipeg-based guitar shop that welcomed these talented musicians for a joint
show before they formed the Wailin' Jennys.
About the Artist
The foundation of the Wailin' Jennys can
be traced to a small guitar shop in Winnipeg known as Sled Dog Music. The shop held a joint show in which the founding members
of the group came together for the first time in 2002. The show went over so well with those in attendance that Ruth Melody,
Nicky Mehta and Cara Luft decided to take their act on the road. The adopted the name the Wailin' Jennys as a play on the
name of the recording artist Waylon Jennings.
Luft eventually left the group and was replaced by Heather Masse and have
had a multitude of other musicians accompany the group on various tours. The group released their first album, 40 Days, and
followed that up with Firecracker two years later. In 2009 the group released their first live album, Live at the Mauch Chunk
Opera House. The Wailin' Jennys' most recent release is Bright Morning Stars, which came out in 2011. The Jennys continue
to tour and entertain their fans with their renowned live performances.
The Wailin' Jennys
broke through with their debut album, 40 Days, in 2004. The album featured the original trio of Ruth Melody, Nicky Mehta and
Cara Luft, and was the final record to feature Luft. The record was impressive enough to earn the group a Juno Award for Roots
and Traditional Album of the Year by a Group.
