About War Horse Kansas City

War Horse is the Tony-Award winning musical based on the beloved novel by Michael Morpurgo. This touching tale tells the story of Albert, a teen boy living on a farm just before the outbreak of World War I, and his half-thoroughbred horse, Joey. Albert's impoverished family is struggling to get by, so his father sells Joey to the cavalry just as the war begins. Once he is of age, Albert enlists in the army in a desperate attempt to find his cherished horse and bring him home.

War Horse premiered in October of 2007 at the Olivier Theatre in the South Bank, London, and played until March 2009. It made its West End debut on April 3, 2009 at the New London Theatre, and was met with rave reviews. The show quickly became popular due to its innovative use of life-size horse puppets from the Handspring Puppet Company. The West End production of War Horse went on to win an Olivier Award, Evening Standard Theatre Award, and a London Critics' Circle Theatre Award. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip even paid the show a visit, marking their first private theatre visit in several years. The highly successful run in the West End made it the highest weekly gross for a play in the West End. War Horse officially opened on Broadway on April 14 2011, and received five Tony Awards, including Best Play, Best Direction of a Play, Best Scenic Design of a Play, Best Lighting Design of a Play, and Best Sound Design of a Play. The Broadway production also received three Outer Critics Circle Awards for Outstanding New Broadway Play, Outstanding Director of a Play, Outstanding Lighting Design, and a nomination for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play for Seth Numrich.

War Horse also began a number of tours outside the United States, including a Canadian production in Toronto on February 28, 2012 at Mirvish Productions' Princess of Wales Theatre, an Australian tour in December 2012, and a German tour in Berlin in October 2013. The US National tour also started around this time, launching at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

As the heartfelt tale of War Horse unfolds on screen, you will be completely captivated by the raw emotion and stirring musical numbers that accompany this story.

War Horse Kansas City Breakthrough

War Horse was an instant success, but its Broadway debut helped bring this amazing play to the attention of the mainstream. After enjoying success on the stage, War Horse was made into a film adaptation in 2011. The Steven Spielberg directed film included a cast of Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Marsan, Toby Kebbell, David Kross, and Peter Mullan. The movie was a box office success, and was nominated for two Golden Globes, five BAFTAs, and six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The success of the film has only added to the stage production's prestige, and the musical experienced a new wave of fans.

War Horse Kansas City Trivia

Did you know that the horse puppets are actually ridden by the actors on stage?

The amazing puppetry work can be seen onstage as the life-size horse puppets gallop and trot across the stage with actors riding on top of them, as if they were real. These stunning puppets are operated by puppeteers working alongside the horse, which is impressive considering the total weight is anywhere from 132-154 pounds on their shoulders. In fact, each sequence featuring an actor riding on the horse cannot be more than about six minutes, because that's about as long as the puppeteers can bear. It took approximately 10 months to make all of the puppets that were used in the show. The puppeteers work so seamlessly, that most audience members forget they are even there.
