West Side Story Tickets
One of the most beloved and longest-running Broadway shows in history is back with a new
revival and national tour. StubHub has theater tickets available for West Side Story, the
Broadway classic that earned its place in the hearts and souls of musical fans the world over with its phenomenal score and
lyrics, written by icons Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, and a classic tale of love against all odds. Unforgettable
songs like "Maria," "I Feel Pretty," and "America" became instant favorites, and transformed the Broadway scene into a more
progressive and modern world.
West Side Story
The first production of West Side Story was first conceived
in 1947 as a musical re-telling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet set in New York City in the mid-20th century. After many
rounds of re-writes in order to get the material perfect, Bernstein and Sondheim settled on the plot we know and love today.
Tony and Maria, star-crossed lovers from two different ethnic backgrounds (Italian and Puerto Rican, respectively,) must contend
with the consequences of their families and friends discovering their secret. Their story ends tragically with a fight between
rival gangs the Jets (to which Tony belonged) and the Sharks (to whom Maria's friends and family gave their loyalty) gone
awry, but the ultimate message is one of unyielding love and staying true to yourself in the face of adversity and pressure.
Not only does West Side Story tell a poignant story of love and loss, but conveys a timeless lesson about diversity and the
cultural climate of gang culture in the 1950's and 1960's. Maria's sister, Anita, illustrates the plight of immigrants in
the mid-century and their struggle to integrate into American culture while still staying true to their heritage in the poignant
number "America," where she disparages Maria and girls like her for abandoning her culture while sarcastically mocking the
notion of the American Dream.
Theater Tickets
Hard-hitting cultural commentary and soulful avant-garde
music and lyrics are not the only reasons why West Side Story has stood the test of time. Bernstein and Sondheim created characters
that are still influential and iconic nearly 60 years later. The original Broadway production cast launched the career of
Chita Rivera, who played Anita, and established the roles of Maria and Tony as the ultimate goal for aspiring actors vying
for the positions in productions on the West End, Broadway, and regional and international tours. Get your West
Side Story tickets now for the production in a city nearest you!
