West Virginia Mountaineers Football Schedule

After struggling their way through a difficult 2013 season that saw the Mountaineers finish tied for seventh in the Big 12 with a 2-7 conference record. The West Virginia Mountaineers are gearing up for another solid season of college football action, and the Big 12 program is out for some big wins as they take on their biggest competitors on the football field all season long. Whether they're playing at home at Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium or are out on the road, the West Virginia University football team is sure to collect big crowds for every conference match up on the schedule. Last season's conference record was unacceptable and fans can be sure that the Mountaineers will be extremely focused leading up to the 2014 season to turn things around.

West Virginia starts the season off with what could be its toughest game of the year as they take on the always formidable Alabama Crimson Tide on August 30th in Atlanta, Georgia as part of the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Classic. If ever there were a time for the Mountaineers to show they are back on the winning track a nationally televised game against Alabama would be it. On September 20th the Oklahoma Sooners come to Mountaineer Field in what could prove to be a pivotal Big 12 game but the Mountaineers will need the support of all of their most loyal fans to come away with a win.

West Virginia Mountaineers Football Conference

The West Virginia Mountaineers are currently part of the Big 12 Conference, although they have bounced around different conferences over the last several decades. After stints in the late 1800s and early 1900s as an independent team, the Mountaineers joined the Southern Conference from 1950-67, thereafter becoming independent again until 1990. Fans of the Mountaineers saw them as a Big East competitor from 1991-2012, with West Virginia joining the Big 12 with the start of the 2013 season. As part of the Big 12 Conference, the Mountaineers play in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), along with other Big 12 teams like the Baylor Bears, Iowa State Cyclones, Kansas Jayhawks, Kansas State Wildcats, Oklahoma Sooners, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Texas Longhorns, TCU Horned Frogs and Texas Tech Red Raiders. Bowl games that Big 12 Conference football teams can qualify for include the Fiesta Bowl, AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic, Alamo Bowl, Buffalo Wild WIngs Bowl, Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl, Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas and the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

West Virginia Mountaineers Football Rivalries

Although they aren't in the same NCAA conference, the West Virginia Mountaineers have a huge rivalry against the nearby Pitt Panthers, whom they have been playing on the football field on an annual basis since 1895. The Mountaineers and the Panthers square off in the Backyard Brawl that has yielded some of the most memorable football games of all time, and the teams continue to compete despite the Mountaineers moving to the Big 12 in 2013. The Mountaineers have also had a history with the Syracuse Orange, with the rival teams playing for the Floyd "Ben" Schwartzwalder Trophy, although now that the Orange play in the ACC and the Mountaineers are part of the Big 12, this rivalry could see an absence of playing time in the future. The West Virginia football team is also a big rival of the Virginia Tech Hokies, which sparked up during both teams' tenure in the Big East Conference in the '90s. The Virginia - Virginia Tech rivalry revolved around the Black Diamond Trophy for Appalachia bragging honors, and although this rivalry has been dormant since the Mountaineers' switch to the Big 12, it is set to be renewed in the near future.

West Virginia Mountaineers Football History

As part of the NCAA FBS football division, the West Virginia Mountaineers are one of the winningest teams around, although they don't have any national championship titles under their belt. To date, the Mountaineers have taken home a total of 15 conference championships, including those in the Southern Conference (1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1958, 1964, 1965, 1967) as well as the Big East Conference (1988, 1993, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2010, 2011). The Mountaineers have also been a big presence in bowl games in the 2000s, winning the Sugar Bowl over Georgia in 2005, the Gator Bowl over Georgia Tech in 2006, the Fiesta Bowl over Oklahoma in 2007 and the Orange Bowl over Clemson in 2011. Now that they're part of the Big 12 Conference, the West Virginia football team has their work cut out for them in making it to bowl games at the end of the regular season, and the team is certainly out for such distinction this season -- and always.

West Virginia Mountaineers Football NFL Players

Over the last several decades, the West Virginia Mountaineers football team has seen several solid players through the ranks of the team, and has sent players onto the NFL to play pro ball after their tenures with the Mountaineers. One of the biggest names to pass through the Mountaineers football program was quarterback Major Harris, a Heisman Trophy finalist in 1988 and 1989. The team has retired the numbers 21 for Ira Errett Rodgers No. 75 Sam Huff, although there have been several other top players at West Virginia as well. Today, there are several Mountaineers playing in the NFL, including punter Pat McAfee, quarterback Geno Smith, guard Don Barclay, and receivers Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey, among others. Former Mountaineers Joe Stydahar and Sam Huff are also enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
