Williams Arena History

Located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Williams Arena has been bringing one great show to the stage after another for more than a decade. Even though it hasn't been around all that long, it has become nothing short of a staple of the local community thanks to the wide variety of events that it offers, from basketball and ice skating to concerts and boxing matches that are sure to be the talk of the town leading up to show time.

First opened all the way back in 1927, Williams Arena has gone through a number of name changes, but still serves the singular purpose of bringing high quality entertainment to the community. In between huge performers taking to the stage, everyone comes together for Minnesota Golden Gophers college basketball (men's and women's), and that's because there is nothing like seeing college hoops at the highest possible level. Once you're there, you'll understand loud and clear what all the excitement is about around town.

Williams Arena Events/Teams

When the Golden Gophers are locked in a heated battle with a top-tier opponent, there is nothing close to the feeling of being in the stands with your fellow fans, though that's not something you're going to learn sitting on your couch. Come out and see all the action the way it was meant to be seen as the Gophers look to dominate their Big 10 opponents and make a big move up the conference standings.

But while the men's team often gets much of the press, there's also plenty of excitement about the women's team as well, and that's because they always have an explosive roster loaded with some of the best players in the game. There are so many big matchups on the schedule, you'll have plenty of opportunities each and every season to join in the heart-pounding action.

Minneapolis, Minnesota

If you've never been to Minneapolis, well, it's probably time to change that. Though it sometimes gets a bad rep for its serious winters, which are also as beautiful as it comes by the way, this is a city that has tons of culture backing it up. The rich sports scene includes the Twins of MLB, the Vikings of the NFL and the T-Wolves of the NBA, giving fans plenty to cheer about from year to year thanks to the unbelievable professional sports talent that is always around the city.

But even though it's obviously great to see the pros do their thing, it's hard to get any more exciting than watching top-tier college basketball. When it's only pride and school spirit on the line, the whole game is taken to a completely different level, making it always a good idea to come out and see what all the buzz is about around Minneapolis. Once you make it to Minneapolis, you'll be kicking yourself for not checking it out sooner.

Williams Arena Seating Layout

Whether you're on the right, left or somewhere in the center, you're bound to get a great show if you make it out to Williams Arena. No, we're not talking about governmental impasses and political theater; we're talking about the elegant seating arrangement of the Williams Arena in Minneapolis. There isn't a bad seat in the house, which is something that you really won't understand until you actually make it out to see it for yourself. Once you're there watching one of your favorite musicians or sports teams, the last thing you'll be thinking about is your seat, however, as you'll be jumping out of it all too often from one ballad to the next as a great musician brings the house down.

With up to nearly 15,000 strong for the biggest events of the year, this is just one of those places that you absolutely need to be a part of sooner or later if you love big-time concert or sporting events, and one look at the schedule and you'll see plenty of prominent matchups and concerts that you know you'll want to see up close and personal.

Williams Arena Trivia

Did you know that Williams Arena was the backdrop for famous 70s flick Ice Castles?

Yup, long before D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly sizzled on the screen during "The Cutting Edge," "Ice Castles" brought the skating romantic drama to the screen in a way that has never been done before – and it went down at Williams Arena in Minneapolis. Starring Lynn-Holly Johnson and Robby Benson, not to mention a young Tom Skerritt, Ice Castles was an under-the-radar hit in 1978 for Columbia Pictures, even inspiring a straight-to-video remake two decades later. Once you make it out to the stands of a great Williams Arena event, you can understand its cinematic value loud and clear, particularly if you're there for a top-tier ice skating event or a highly anticipated home game for either the men's or women's Minnesota Golden Gophers basketball team.
