World Music refers to both “roots” music of any culture that is created and
performed by the indigenous peoples of the region. It can also refer to other non-western music including popular music
and classical music. It is basically all foreign music and the term became popular in the 1980s. Some examples include
tunes from the Middle East, Africa, and Central and South America.
The most popular genres these days seem to be French Pop Music, Afro-Cuban music although there are also plenty of other
regions that continue to release great sounds and that are eagerly bought up by music fanatics. Be sure to educate yourself
globally. Get a pair of World Music tickets and attend the next concert that is in your
town.
There are plenty of World Music festivals and World Music events that take place throughout
the year. They include: The California World Music Festival, The Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival of Music and Dance, The
Festival in the Desert and the World Sacred Music Festival. Make sure that you make at least one of these events this year!
