West Virginia Mountaineers Basketball Team Info

Though the Mountaineers always have plenty of talent on their roster, their best player in the history of the West Virginia Mountaineers basketball program is undoubtedly Jerry West. West had some fantastic seasons for the Mountaineers during his tenure with the team and would go on to become one of the best players in the history of the National Basketball Association. West averaged an astounding 27 points per game for his entire pro career, one of the highest marks in league history. Other important parts of the program history are Joe Alexander, Mike Gansey, Greg Jones, Rod Hundley and many, many more, helping to build a proud tradition of excellence over the years and establishing the Mountaineers as a major staple of the Morgantown, West Virginia sports scene.

NCAA Basketball Experience

There is something special about seeing the game of basketball in person, and many fans think college hoops is the cream of the crop. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more electric atmosphere than a college basketball game, as the fans of the spot go simply nuts for their favorite teams. The West Virginia Mountaineers host top teams each and every season, and this year will be no different. If you've never seen this squad in action before, then now is the time to change that. Be there when the Mountaineers take down a rival team with a buzzer-beater this season; be there when they suffocate an opposing team with their defense. Make sure you get out to the arena this season for all the action in another year that is sure to be packed with moments that will have you clinging to the edge of your seat in no time.

West Virginia Mountaineers Basketball History

The West Virginia Mountaineers basketball program dates a long time, but the first time this program really made national waves was in 1959, when the team made it all the way to the National Championship Game but fell short of one last victory. The Mountaineers have made more than 20 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, reaching the Final Four twice, with the most recent appearance in the Final Four came in 2010. With a rich history and a great current program always bringing in dynamic players to campus, this is a team that knows how to generate some major fanfare from one season to the next, which is exactly what's going to be happening this year as they look to make their move up the Big 12 standings.

West Virginia Mountaineers Basketball Trivia

How many times did West Virginia alumnus Jerry West score at least 30 points or more per game in the NBA?

The answer is four, which is an amazing feat in any era but particularly back when West was playing, mainly considering it was before the addition of the three-point arc. West certainly wasn't just a great scorer, however, as he was always a terrific passer, particularly later in his career. Though West would remain a top-tier scorer right until the end, he ended up averaging 9.5 assists or more two different seasons, including when he led the league assists with a 9.7 per game clip back in 1971-1972 for the Lakers.
