West averaged an astounding 27 points per game for his entire pro career, one of the highest marks in league history. Other important parts of the program history are Joe Alexander, Mike Gansey, Greg Jones, Rod Hundley and many, many more, helping to build a proud tradition of excellence over the years and establishing the Mountaineers as a major staple of the Morgantown, West Virginia sports scene.

The Mountaineers have made more than 20 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, reaching the Final Four twice. The team's most recent appearance in the Final Four came in 2010. The team is still searching for its first National Championship, and fans are hoping that this is the year that they'll break through and at least head back to the Big Dance. Before West became an absolute legend in the pro game, going to 14 different All-Star Games and gaining the reputation of being one of the top players in basketball history, he was absolutely lighting it up for the West Virginia Mountaineers. In 1959 and again in 1960, West was named the SoCon Player of the Year and was also named as a consensus All-American in both seasons.
