Wyoming Cowboys Basketball Schedule

Laramie, Wyoming is one of the most exciting places to be each year as the college basketball season gets underway and Arena-Auditorium, home of the Wyoming Cowboys is annually one of the toughest places in the country for opposing teams to come into and get a win. Playing in the highly competitive Mountain West Conference is never easy but the Cowboys always prove to be up to the task. Expect big things from Wyoming this season as they will have completely adjusted to second year coach Larry Shyatt's system and will be looking to improve upon a 9-9 conference record and make a return to the top of the Mountain West standings. No one is ever excited to go up against the Cowboys and expectations are high for the team that could well be poised for a deep run in March.

Once again the Wyoming Cowboys will be taking on all of the toughest teams in the Mountain West Conference including the San Diego State Aztecs, the UNLV Running Rebels, the New Mexico Lobos, the Nevada Wolf Pack, and others. Playing in such a tough conference gives the Cowboys the opportunity to score big wins against ranked opponents that will only add to their resume on Selection Sunday should they not score an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by winning the Mountain West Tournament. This could well be the year that the Cowboys once again win the Mountain West and make a return to the NCAA Tournament. Tickets will be selling quickly to see the Cowboys at Arena-Auditorium this year so be sure to get yours from StubHub as soon as possible so you can get out and help give Wyoming a significant home court advantage.

Wyoming Cowboys Basketball History

The Wyoming Cowboys have a long and storied tradition of college basketball that dates all the way back to 1905 and includes a National Championship from 1943. They are a charter member of the Mountain West Conference and have won two titles in the conference, in 2001 and again in 2002. Prior to the formation of the Mountain West Conference, Wyoming won a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship, eight Skyline Conference championships, and five Western Athletic Conference championships. It is safe to say that Wyoming fans are used to winning, especially at home where opponents playing at Arena-Auditorium have to deal not only with a long trip to the arena but also with the altitude to which the Cowboys are already accustomed. Last season was the Cowboys' first under Larry Shyatt and the squad went 9-9 in the Mountain West and scored an invitation to the CBI Tournament where they lost in the first round to Texas A&M. The returning players enter the 2014-2015 season with a chip on their shoulder and something to prove as they look to earn yet another Mountain West title as well as a trip to the NCAA Tournament. This is an exciting time for Wyoming Cowboys Basketball as they are on the verge of a return to greatness, and all die hard Cowboys fans will want to be there right from the start.

Wyoming Cowboys Basketball Conference

In recent years the Mountain West Conference has emerged as a true national powerhouse. There are now eleven members of the Mountain West Conference: San Diego State, UNLV, Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico, Nevada, Fresno State, Wyoming, Utah State, and San Jose State. Previous members have included TCU, Utah, and BYU. Of the current members, Utah State leads the way with twenty NCAA Tournament appearances. However, so far all of their appearances have come before joining the Mountain West. UNLV and Wyoming, two charter members of the Mountain West, are next in line with 19 and 14 respectively. UNLV and Wyoming are also the only two members of the conference to win a National Championship, with UNLV winning in 1990 and Wyoming winning all the way back in 1943. Lately it has been San Diego State, New Mexico, and UNLV who have dominated the conference on the basketball court with SDSU tearing up the national rankings during the 2013-2014 season. The current season is a celebration marking the fifteenth anniversary of the creation of the Mountain West Conference.

The Experience

Attending a top college basketball game is one of the best experiences to be found in sports. Many of the top student athletes in the world take the court in college basketball, when this is combined with some of the most passionate fans in all of sports there is an atmosphere in the arena that cannot be found anywhere else. When you set foot in Arena-Auditorium for a Wyoming Cowboys home basketball game this will all be clear. As the teams set up for opening jump ball the fans get on their feet and loudly cheer for their alma mater and hometown favorites. The game continues full of end to end action, big time shots, and clutch defensive stops. All of a sudden the clock is winding down in the second half and the two sides are wrapped up in yet another tight contest. Your palms get sweaty with each trip down the floor and each time a player from your favorite team lets loose a shot you hold your breath until the ball tickles the twine. This continues until the final buzzer when the Cowboys' side erupts after another big win and their fans exit of the arena in jubilation.

Former Wyoming Cowboy Ken Sailors, who was a star of the 1943 championship team, is responsible for an innovation that completely changed the sport as he was the first to introduce the now commonplace jump shot to the game. He was named Player of the Year as well as Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament in 1943. After taking some time away from college to fight in World War II, Ken Sailors returned to play for the Cowboys and was again named Player of the Year in 1946. The Wyoming Cowboys have made it to the NCAA Tournament 14 times, most recently in 2002.
