Formed in 1984 in Hoboken, N.J., Yo La Tengo (Spanish for "I have it!" or when referencing female-gender object or person, additionally "I've got her.") came together, expressing their passion for the music of The Soft Boys, Mission of Burma and Arthur Lee's Love. Formed by Ira Kaplan, the group originally consisted of Kaplan's wife and drummer/vocalist Georgie Hubley. During the '80s, the group saw success in their Rise of Water single and a cover of Love, making them a critic's favorite.
