Yoruba Andabo was born out of a spontaneous, musical get-together at the Havana harbor in 1961, where a group of dock workers
convened to play native West African music and celebrate their Cuban and West African heritage. When the musicians realized
they had something unique, they decided to begin performing their music. They first performed in 1985 at the Havana seat of
UNEAC, an organization that unites Cuba's professional writers and artists. These performances led to the group being signed
to a top local label known as EGREM. With the help of the label and a close working relationship with renowned singer Mercedita
Valdes, the group became a sensation. And in 1994, the band of amateur musicians became a real touring musical company under
the name Compañía Folkoríco Yoruba Andabo. And over the years, they have continued to have success, recording 11 albums and
performing in prestigious venues including the World of Music and Dance in Toronto and the Aaron Davis Hall in New York City.
