The story of the Young Empires dates back to 2009 when Aaron Ellingson and Jacob Palahnuk got together with other friends to jam. The pair recognized the strong musical connection between them and decided to form a band. Matthew Vlahovich joined the duo after Palahnuk met him at a gig. After less than a month of getting the band off the ground, Vlahovich received a gig offer to open for We Have Band for his solo project at Wrongbar in Toronto, but instead, he decided to do the gig as a band. With only a few songs drafted at the time, the band only had a mere two weeks to write a set to fill a half hour. Proving they worked well under pressure, the Young Empires have released a number of demos and videos online since that pivotal moment. Before even releasing their first EP, the band managed to earn a reputation on a worldwide level, cultivating loyal followers along the way. Their journey has spanned three continents in support of other bands.
Within just a year after the band's inception, the Young Empires participated in the Nem-Catacoa Festival in Bogota, which also featured Jamiroquai and Green Day. They continued to build their impressive resume with performances at events like The Juno Awards in 2011 and the North-by-Northeast Music and Film Festival in 2010, as well as at the SoundClash Music Awards in Toronto, just to name a few highlights.
