Born Yunalis Mat Zara'ai, future music star Yuna was born in the hectic metropolis
of Alor Setar, Malaysia. Spending her early years studying law, she would eventually find herself immersed in the music scene
while studying at university. She had shown interest in music from a young age, spending her time writing original songs and
learning to play guitar. Talent scouts in Malaysia would see her potential, and eventually facilitate one of the most important
moments of Yuna's life - a record deal with international label FADER.
Yuna would immediately start releasing albums
to an international fan base, but never lost sight of her Malaysian roots by mixing up her recordings with Malay based records.
She would be helped along the way by some of the biggest names in music, including famed producer and musician Pharrell Williams.
With lots of excitement generated around her US debut, she soon made the rounds on late night television such as Conan and
Carson Daly, had major time slots at American festivals Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, and had critics across the world ranting
and raving about her fresh new sound.
Having gone far from her days of being a MySpace based artist, Yuna has since
been nominated for dozens of awards including a Best New Band in the World award from Iggy's and a National Youth Icon Award
from Malaysian prime minister Razak.
Yuna's big breakout album would be her 2012 self titled
Yuna. The album was her first full length released in the US, and immediately climbed to the top of Billboard's US Heatseekers
chart, peaking at the #19 spot. The album would be carried by the monumental hit "Live Your Life", produced by legendary artist
Pharrell, which shot straight to the top of the US Heatseekers chart, eventually resting on the #37 spot. Her second single
from the album, "Lullabies", would cement Yuna's success as it invaded airwaves the world over.
Yuna's much anticipated
full length follow up, Nocturnal, would drop in 2013 and immediately continue the train of momentum that she had built from
her US debut. The album again lit up the charts, hitting a notable #27 on US Heatseekers and again garnered worldwide acclaim.
The album would be carried by three hit singles, including "Rescue", "Falling", and "Comeback", all of which received extensive
radio airplay and have become go to anthems for Yuna's live performances.
Yuna has two separate
sets of discography, widely broken down into her International facing and Malaysian facing releases. If you can't get enough
Yuna, check out her earlier work, a slight departure from her current material.
Years ago, Yuna described her musical
style as a cross between Mary Poppins and Coldplay. A humorous comparison, the description has stuck as numerous journalists
and music critics have endorsed the comparison.
