Zappa Plays Zappa Background

Zappa Plays Zappa was born in 2006, premiering with shows in Canada, the United States and Canada. The shows highlighted Frank Zappa's contributions representative of the 1960s to the late 1970s. The tribute group is comprised of Frank Zappa's eldest son, Dweezil Zappa (lead guitar), as well as musicians who had played with Frank Zappa at one time or another, including Terry Bozzio (drummer/vocalist); Napoleon Murphy Brock (sax, flute and vocals); and Steve Vai (guitarist). At many of their shows, Zappa Plays Zappa incorporated phenomenal theatrics by using Frank Zappa video and audio recordings to play along to, including parts of "Muffin Man," "Cosmik Debris," "Chunga's Revenge" and "Dumb All Over."

Following a hiatus, Zappa Plays Zappa took stages in the U.S. during the fall of 2006. The tour included a performance in the Big Apple on Halloween. This show served as the perfect way to pay homage to Frank Zappa, who held the tradition of playing Halloween concerts in New York.

In the summer of 2007, Zappa Plays Zappa embarked on a North American tour followed by a European tour in the fall. They came back in time to keep the tradition alive, playing a Halloween concert in New York. Ray White (guitarist/vocalist) joined the band on their tour as a special guest. White was a steadfast Zappa musician in the 1970s and 1980s. The 2007 tour wrapped up in Australia at the close of the year. They started out 2008 with a few performances in Japan. For those shows, Steve Vai stepped into the lineup.

Tracing the footsteps of Frank Zappa's bands, which included a revolving lineup, Zappa Plays Zappa made their initial personnel changes during 2009-2010. Aaron Arntz (keyboardist) exited first followed by Ray White, who was replaced by Ben Thomas.

Zappa Plays Zappa continued their rigorous touring schedule and additionally added a bootcamp, developed by Dweezil. Billed as "Dweezilla," the bootcamp granted students the opportunity to learn in a hands-on environment.

In 2012, the band underwent a transformation again. This time Pete Griffin left, who was replaced by Scott Thunes.
