42nd Street London show dates
42nd Street is one of the most persistently beloved musicals ever to grace the stages of Broadway and London. Telling a familiar tale of the American dream, the musical has captured hearts across the theatre-going world with the inspiring tale of its plucky heroine and with iconic songs such as "We're In the Money", "Shuffle Off to Buffalo", "Dames" and of course, "42nd Street". It's hardly a surprise that 42nd Street has withstood the test of time to play yet again at the magnificent Theatre Royal Drury Lane, fronted by stars such as Grammy Award winner Sheena Easton and directed by none other than Mark Bramble, who has been intimately connected to the musical from the very start.
42nd Street London's background
42nd Street was inspired by a novel of the same name by Bradford Ropes, as well as the 1933 film adaptation that followed. With music by Harry Warren, lyrics by Alan Dubin and Johnny Mercer, and a book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble, 42nd Street was adapted yet again for the stage under the direction of producer David Merrick. Although it was a gamble to pump so much money into an adaptation, as similar musicals had previously failed, the show was ultimately a rousing success. It debuted on August 25, 1980 at the Winter Garden Theatre and that year won the Tony Award for Best Musical. The London production, which opened in 1984, fared similarly well, taking home the Olivier Award for Best Musical. Even the 2001 Broadway revival stood the test of time, snagging the Tony for Best Revival.
A sort of "jukebox musical" that incorporated popular songs that had previously been released with other projects, 42nd Street tells the story of a young woman, Peggy Sawyer, who arrives in New York City on a bus from Allentown, Pennsylvania, with big dreams and a lot of talent. When leading lady Dorothy Brock is injured, Peggy finds herself plucked from the chorus line and given a real chance at stardom.
