Shinedown is an American rock band from Jacksonville, Florida, formed in 2001 by lead singer Brent Smith after his previous group dissolved. Still under contract with Atlantic Records, Smith built a new project that became one of the most consistent chart acts in modern rock, with eight studio albums across more than two decades: Leave a Whisper (2003), Us and Them (2005), The Sound of Madness (2008), Amaryllis (2012), Threat to Survival (2015), Attention Attention (2018), Planet Zero (2022), and Eight (2026). The band's sound pulls from hard rock, post-grunge, alternative metal, and arena rock, with pop and Southern rock influences mixed in, and they have cited Stone Temple Pilots, Otis Redding, Pink Floyd, and Iron Maiden as formative influences.
Shinedown built their audience the old way, through relentless touring. The band played over 400 live shows across 2003 and 2004 behind their platinum debut Leave a Whisper, sharing stages with Van Halen, Seether, and 3 Doors Down. In 2005, Save Me became their first single to top Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart, holding number one for twelve straight weeks. The breakthrough scaled up in 2008 with The Sound of Madness, which spent 120 consecutive weeks on the Billboard 200, earned double platinum certification, and produced Second Chance, a crossover hit that reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold three million units.
No act has dominated Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart like Shinedown. The band holds the record for most number one singles on the chart with 24, more than any other artist, and every single they have released has reached the chart's top five. In 2021, Billboard ranked Shinedown number one on its Greatest of All Time Mainstream Rock Artists chart, and the band has sold more than 10 million records worldwide. The road never slowed either, from the Carnival of Madness arena tour they headline to acoustic runs in smaller rooms, and in 2022 the band was inducted into Mohegan Sun's Walk of Fame. For fans weighing Shinedown tickets, that is the story in one line: two decades of roadwork and a catalog built for big rooms.
