Post Malone, born Austin Richard Post on July 4, 1995, in Syracuse, New York, grew up in a household shaped by music. His father, a former DJ, exposed him to hip-hop, country, and rock from an early age. After his family relocated to Grapevine, Texas, Malone picked up guitar (inspired, by his own account, by the Guitar Hero video game series) and played in a local metalcore band during high school. He later dropped out of Tarrant County College and moved to Los Angeles, where he connected with a collective of producers and began recording the music that would define his career.
Malone uploaded "White Iverson" to SoundCloud in February 2015, and the track surpassed a million views within a month. By August of that year he had signed with Republic Records. His debut album, Stoney (2016), produced the Diamond-certified single "Congratulations" featuring Quavo and spent over 77 weeks on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, breaking a record held by Michael Jackson's Thriller. From there, the momentum only accelerated. Beerbongs & Bentleys (2018) debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and broke Spotify's single-day streaming record with 78.7 million worldwide streams. Hollywood's Bleeding (2019) repeated that chart-topping debut and spawned "Circles," which logged 61 weeks on the Hot 100. His collaboration with Swae Lee, "Sunflower," became the first song in RIAA history to earn a 2x Diamond certification.
Malone's ability to move across genres sets him apart. His music blends pop, hip-hop, trap, country, R&B, and rock into a sound critics have described as a "melting pot" of everything he grew up on. He has cited Bob Dylan, Kurt Cobain, Johnny Cash, and Kanye West among his influences. That range carried into his 2024 country debut, F-1 Trillion, which became his third No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 and featured "I Had Some Help" with Morgan Wallen, a song that broke Spotify's single-day country streaming record. The same year, he performed "America the Beautiful" at Super Bowl LVIII and appeared on Taylor Swift's "Fortnight" and Beyoncé's "Levii's Jeans" from Cowboy Carter.
