The Alabama Crimson Tide represent the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, and the program has been playing football since 1892. The nickname 'Crimson Tide' took hold after the 1907 season, and Alabama has competed in the Southeastern Conference since the league was founded. The track record is hard to match: 18 claimed national championships, 13 of them awarded by the AP or Coaches polls, plus 34 conference titles and an NCAA-record 79 postseason bowl appearances.
Wallace Wade's 1925 team introduced Alabama football to a national audience by beating Washington 20-19 in the Rose Bowl, a result historians often call the game that changed Southern football. Frank Thomas kept the program among the country's best in the 1930s, but the defining run came under Paul 'Bear' Bryant, who coached the Crimson Tide from 1958 to 1982 and won six national titles. Nick Saban built a second dynasty from 2007 to 2023, adding six more national championships and four Heisman Trophy winners. Kalen DeBoer took over as head coach in 2024.
Home games are played at Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium, which seats 100,077 and ranks among the largest stadiums in the United States. The Million Dollar Band, mascot Big Al and the rallying cry 'Roll Tide!' shape the atmosphere, while 'Yea Alabama' is the official fight song and 'Dixieland Delight' has become an unofficial anthem. Rivalry weekends and SEC matchups in Tuscaloosa draw some of the most engaged crowds in college football.
