A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder was created through the efforts of Robert L. Freedman and Steven Lutvak. It is based on the 1907 novel Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal by Roy Horniman. This same novel also inspired a 1949 film named Kind Hearts and Coronets. A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder initially opened at the Hartford Stage in Hartford, Conn., in late 2012 before coming to Broadway at the Walter Herr Theatre in November 2013. The initial opening ran until Jan. 17, 2016. In 2015, the play began a national tour, which started at the Proctor’s Theatre in Schenectady, N.Y., and ended in March 2017 at the Sacramento Community Center Theater.
