About A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Penned by William Shakespeare somewhere between 1590 and 1597, A Midsummer Night’s Dream contains thematic elements of humor, love, religion, feminism and sexual identity. The story, which is playing at the Ziff Ballet Opera House, in Miami, focuses on the upcoming wedding and marriage of Theseus, the Duke of Athens, to Hippolyta, the Queen of the Amazons. As their wedding is continually manipulated and influenced by spirited forest fairies, a comical spectacle ensues.
With four interconnecting plot lines, these “stories within a story” simultaneously weave in and out of one another. As one of Shakespeare’s most well-known and popular plays, there is no shortage of drama within the imaginative world of Fairyland. Intimate and melodramatic characters such as Titania, the beautiful Queen of the Fairies, Bottom, the comedic “Mechanical,” and Puck, the mischievous, witty sprite, leave audiences laughing and amused.
There are various adaptations of Shakespeare’s play; the ballet version combines the wonder, mystery and magic of the original tale with the beauty and grace of the dance.
Created by George Balanchine in 1962, the full-length show premiered at the New York City Ballet, stunning audiences and critics alike. Keeping the familiar tale of lovers and fairies in Act I, Act II focuses on the wedding merriment through classical ballet. The original cast starred Melissa Hayden as Titania, Edward Villella as Oberon, Arthur Mitchell as Puck and Gloria Govrin as Hippolyta.
With music created by Felix Mendelssohn, the 2015 “reimagining” of the tale includes new sets and costumes designed by Michele Oka Doner; dramatic direction resides with playwright Tarell McCraney (Run Mourner Run, Choir Boy, Head of Passes). The ballet troupe includes 24 children. Add six vocalists and you have a Shakespearean spectacular!
