Disney’s Aladdin first captured hearts back in 1992 as an animated film. The musical adaptation of the iconic movie still follows commoner Aladdin and his journey from being nobody to wooing Princess Jasmine after chancing upon a Genie. However, their magic carpet ride to a whole new world is not so smooth. Antagonist Jafar also wants a piece of luck found by Aladdin after picking up the Genie's lamp. The adaptation is led by director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw. It premiered on Mar. 24, 2014, and continues to perform at the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York City in addition to national tours.

A Whole New World

The story of Aladdin started while lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken were having fun under the sea and working on the 1989 Disney animated film version of The Little Mermaid. However, only three of their songs made it to the 1992 release of the animated version of Aladdin’s story. With much material to work on, Disney Theatrical Group tapped book writer and lyricist Chad Beguelin to work on Ashman and Menken’s unused songs and create a musical adaptation of the successful 1992 film. The adaptation also featured new characters as replacements for the beloved animals in the animated film. The musical introduced several new names including Babkak, Omar and Kassim as replacements for Aladdin’s sidekick, the monkey Abu in the 1992 film. Aladdin The Musical made its debut on stage in 2014.
