Aled Jones Biography - Three Decades on From Walking in the Air
Born in Bangor in Wales, this singer joined his hometown choir at the age of nine and was a lead soloist within two years. Spotted by someone in the congregation, he was signed by a local record label and his career took off, most notably in 1985 when he recorded a cover version of 'Walking in the Air' for use in a television advert. Due to public demand, the track was released as a single and gaining a number five hit in the UK charts. His treble voice was hugely popular throughout the '80s and contributed to 16 albums, six million record sales, performances for the likes of the Queen and Pope John Paul II and becoming the first artist to have two albums simultaneously in the popular charts.
After his voice broke at 16 years old, he took some time off, returning in 1990 to make his acting debut at the Royal Theatre in an adaptation of Richard Llewellyn's How Green Was My Valley. After studying at the Royal Academy of Music, the singer started his adult recording career, taking on a largely religious repertoire whilst also appearing in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. He would release baritone album From the Heart in 2000, followed by Aled and Higher in the following years, both of which saw chart success. His theatre credits are also impressive in the late '00s, starring in productions including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, White Christmas and Charles Dickens' Hard Times. He became a popular face on UK television screens too, beginning in 2004 as a contestant on the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing before taking on presenting duties on Songs of Praise, Escape to the Country, Cash in the Attic and ITV's Daybreak. Now after releasing his latest album The Heart of it All in 2014, the singer will be heading out on a UK wide tour in 2016, playing at cathedrals across the country.
