Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Tickets
With New York City as its home base, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has been providing residents and visitors with modern dance art for decades. Founded by Alvin Ailey, a dancer and choreographer, the dance troupe consists of more than 30 dancers and numerous choreographers. The troupe has performed in Senegal's World Festival of Negro Arts and won several awards. Some of its accolades include receiving awards for Best Modern Dance Choreographer as well as Best Modern Dance Company at the 1970 International Dance Festival. With the combination of theatrics and muscular skill as well as the individual personalities of the dancers, the performances are still critically acclaimed even decades later. Although many of Alvin Ailey's pieces are only shown for a couple of seasons, works such as "Night Creature," "Revelations" and "Cry" have been continuously performed throughout the years. Throughout his tenure, Alvin Ailey has created numerous dances for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Company while also using works from various choreographers as well.
When Passion Becomes Iconic
Alvin Ailey began the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in the spring of 1958 with a group of dancers who performed for the first time at the Young Men's Hebrew Association. From there, the group continued to tour until they finally became the resident dance company at the YWCA's Clark Center for the Performing Arts. By 1962, what began as an all-black dance company merged into a multiracial group. That same year, the group was invited to join President John F. Kennedy's "President's Special International Program for Cultural Presentations."
