An American in Paris
An American in Paris is a musical inspired by George Gershwin’s 1928 symphonic composition of the same name. Gershwin’s 20-minute piece was the basis of the 1951 film starring Gene Kelly. The Broadway production of An American in Paris won four Tony Awards in 2015, including for Best Choreography. The stage production has garnered additional awards, most notably won three Outer Critics Circle Awards, four Drama Desk Awards, three Fred and Adele Astaire Awards and a Drama League Award for Outstanding Production.
A story of hope and love, the story follows the journey of American soldier Jerry Mulligan in post-World War II Paris. Uncertain whether to return to the U.S. or stay in Paris, his desire to pursue his love of painting and an encounter with a mysterious woman lead him to stay. With help from fellow veteran and friend Adam Hochberg and Henri Baurel, son of a French Industrialist, he makes Paris home. Soon, he meets his lady of mystery. She is Lise Dassin, a French ballerina and the same woman he and Adam have been encouraging Henri to propose to.
Jerry’s introduction to the vibrant Parisian art scene turns his luck for the better. His future becomes clear and so does Henri’s as each is called to a different path. Lise comes to realize she faces a choice between love and devotion. At the end of the performance that establishes her as an accomplished ballet artist, she understands where her heart lies. All that remains for her is to embrace her future.
