An American in Paris
The Tony Award-winning production the New York Times calls “a triumph! Pure joy!” blends dance and the lyrical genius of George Gershwin into a stunning performance that tells the story of American soldier Jerry Mulligan in post-World War II Paris. Jerry finds himself with a decision immediately following the war: go back to the U.S. or stay in Paris and pursue his love of painting. After he encounters a mysterious woman, he decides to stay.
Jerry connects with Adam Hochberg, a fellow veteran, and Henri Baurel, the son of a wealthy French Industrialist. Shortly after he settles in, he once again encounters his mystery women. He learns she is French ballerina Lise Dassin and the woman he and Adam have encouraged Henri to marry.
An unexpected introduction into the Paris art scene launches Jerry’s career and future. Henri also finds his path forward paved for him. Lise finds herself with a choice between her devotion to Henri and her love for Jerry. As the curtain falls on the performance establishing Lise as an accomplished artist in her own right, she leaves the theater to meet the one she sees as her future.
Critics and audiences love An American in Paris. “It’s been years…since I last saw production numbers that were infused with the kind of rich, sustained creativity…throughout ‘An American in Paris,’” says a reviewer for the Wall Street Journal. Variety declares, “a dancer is a thing of beauty, and there is beaucoup beauty in director-choreographer Christopher Wheeldon’s ravishing production.” The Financial Times raves, “I would beg, borrow or steal to see it all again.”
This show won four 2015 Tony Awards, the Drama League Award for Outstanding Production as well as Outer Critics Circle, Theater World, Drama Desk, the “ACCA” and the Fred and Adele Astaire Awards.
